The variable valve timing sprocket is part of Subaru's Active Valve Control System (AVCS) allowing the ECU to advance or retard the intake cam based on engine operating conditions in order to improve emissions, efficiency, and performance across a wide rpm range. The center hub bolted to the cam is able to rotate within a fixed range relative to the outer timing belt driven portion.
