Its only possible to use lava (probably from mount Etna) for these type of very deep, high relief carvings. Its a relatively soft and plentiful material which has been transformed by a skilled artisan some 170 or so years ago. The face of the cherub (he has little wings making him a cherub) is particularly nicely done. Age: c1860 Victorian, possibly a little earlier Size and weight: 36.
