Today, Hyde Park is synonymous with the University of Chicago. But at its founding in 1853, the area was just 300 acres of land acquired by a young lawyer named Paul Cornell. A new transplant to the area, Cornell bought the stretch of land along the lake between present day 51st and 55th streets. He chose to name the area after the
